For anyone interested in learning more about Speech Team and auditioning for it, here are the dates you need to know!

If you’re new to the team, you should come to ONE of the following informational meetings!

2:45p, Monday, September 22, in the Main Campus LMC

2:45p, Tuesday, September 23, in the Gold Campus Forum Room

Auditions will take place Wednesday, Oct. 1 (for Varsity members, starting at 3:00p) and Thursday, Oct. 2 (for newcomers, starting at 2:45p) in D219. Varsity team members should come in with at least one minute of a prepared speech in their event. Newcomers don’t need to prepare anything. We’ll have scripts ready for you to use.

You will need to read the audition packet and fill out The Form! All of that information can be found here. (Updated 9/10/14)

As always, contact Coach Mehta if you have any questions.

For anyone interested in attending the Neuqua Valley Speech Team Summer Camp, you can download the application here!

The camp is for current team members, incoming freshmen, and anyone else interested in learning more about public speaking.

A few things to note:

  • The camp will take place August 4th-8th from 8:00-11:00a
  • The activities at camp will change from the past. We’re still working out the exact details, but rest assured these changes will benefit everybody!
  • The cost is $175 and all checks should be made out to Wildcat Speech.
  • If you are interested in attending, please let me know ahead of time so I can get the appropriate amount of materials.

For all seniors who have been on the team for at least three years, you can download the application for the David Scheidecker Memorial Scholarship here!

It will be due Wed, April 23rd. Please turn it in to Mr. Mehta in D200 by the end of the day.

About Speech Camps

(Written by Kevin Hill)

Here are a few important updates for bringing this season to a close and preparing for the upcoming one:

Remember that both banquet money and captain applications for next year are due this Friday, March 7th.

Additionally, while it is important to note that this is by no means required, it would be beneficial to go to a speech camp over the summer. Here are a few options:

Neuqua’s Summer Camp: This week long camp is a great time to fine-tune skills and potentially explore other categories; if you are a returner, it would be beneficial to have a piece prepared if you know what category you would like help in. (Mehta says: Details coming this summer; Camp will take place in early August.)

Bradley Summer Forensics Institute (SFI): This is more expensive than the Neuqua camp, but offers more specialized training in one category over a two week period of time. It is located at Bradley University, and all of the current captains, among many other returning team members, have experience at this camp and would be happy to give you more information on it.

Illinois State University Summer Speech Institute: Most members of our team historically have gone to the Bradley camp only, but we’ve been told that ISU is a good choice for a speech camp as well. The only current member of our team who has been to ISU’s camp is Jonathan Kim, and I’m sure he’d be happy to answer any questions that you may have about it. Note that this camp and Bradley’s camp overlap, so you could NOT do both. However, if you pick either one of these, you can still go to Neuqua’s camp, as it doesn’t overlap with either one.

Mehta adds: Northern Illinois University also has a camp worth checking out!

Once again, you are by no means required to attend any of these camps, but they are each a great way to fine tune your skills, or even to break into a new category to figure out what you’re best suited in.

Here are the videos from the Sectional run-through. These videos are only for your personal use, to send to family and friends. They are not listed in the YouTube directory and you can only watch them if you have the links.

I ask that you don’t submit them to other “speech” websites. (You know what I mean…)

Thanks!

The date for banquet is set for Thursday, March 20 from 6:00 – 9:00p. It’ll take place at Tamarack Golf Club (just like last year).

The cost will be $14/person (that includes a pizza/pasta/brownies/cookies buffet) and you’re welcome to bring family members. Checks should be made out to Wildcat Speech. Please return your checks to La Scola in B100 — we must have your money in by Friday, March 7th.

We tried to accommodate as many people as we could! My apologies if you have a conflict that night.
